ONE CHAPTER CHALLENGE | The Ultimate Unhaul

Stressed. I am so incredibly stressed about what to read, having enough time to read, setting deadlines for reading and falling into slumps. This is absolutely not okay. Reading is my passion, my relaxation, something that helps my mental health. If I’m getting this worked up about reading then it isn’t helping me in the ways it normally does.

Why am I stressed? I’m stressed because my TBR is too big. That’s a pretty normal situation for a book blogger, perhaps, but it’s taking too much of a toll on me and I have had enough. Ranting about my epic TBR on twitter led me to create this, the #OneChapterChallenge, where I will read every single unread book on my shelves and if it doesn’t grip me after one chapter, it goes.

Beware books, you may be finding yourselves a new home very soon.

This idea led me to the great conclusion that to do this in good order, I need to catalogue every single book I own (that isn’t already in my unhaul pile), so I started off spending two days doing that.

If you would like to make your own version of this spreadsheet, complete with charts, you can click on this link and then File > Make a copy. Please remember to make a copy, otherwise you will be editing my spreadsheet.

As you can see on the sheet (if you scroll to the right) I’m read only 57% of the books I own – I’ll be honest and say that while I was cataloguing, I was very happily surprised that I’d read over half. I think my partner would have given me a pointed eyebrow raise if I’d only read the 40% I had predicted. Thankfully, my book collection is quite small (less than 500), unlike some of my friends who have way more so this has made me realise that my unhaul goal is manageable. To be honest, just cataloguing the books has made me less stressed about my TBR.

And now the reading begins!

I’m going to start by going A-Z and if it grips me in the first chapter I’ll keep reading! I’m also going to make a thread on twitter to chart my progress and I’ll be doing monthly updates so you can keep up with how it’s going!

What do you think of the challenge? How do you think I’ll fare? Have you got a ridiculous TBR too?

Thanks, Shaye! Honestly, I was daunted but it was much easier than I thought it was going to be and having the catalogue now stops me worrying about how many books I haven’t read because now it’s a number on a page instead of this massive unknown!

I’ve just been reminded how many unread books I own, so I definitely think this is a great idea! I wish I had time to go through all my shelves and catalogue them properly. Anyway, I’m going to be watching your progress with great interest!
