IMI TALKS | The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven

Welcome to the post where Imi gushes about one of her favourite reads of 2017 which releases in NINE DAYS. Now, if you’re new here you may not have heard but there’s this book by the lovely Laura Steven coming out on 8th March with Electric Monkey Books. I was lucky enough to snag an ARC at YALC last summer and absolutely devoured it in a day. Izzy O’Neill has one of the best narrative voices I have ever heard. She’s relatable, hilarious and I wish she was my best friend. For more on this, see my review.

Things have been pretty whirlwind since, including getting part of my review quoted in the finished copies I’MNOTSCREAMING YOU’RESCREAMING, joining Laura’s street team and designing bookmarks for the launch party. Basically, I’ve tried to get involved with the launch of this book in any way I can because I need to shout from the rooftops HOW AMAZING AND IMPORTANT AND HILARIOUS THIS BOOK IS.

So what am I doing here today rambling on about? Well, if one thing is really important within the publishing industry to launch a book, it’s pre-ordering. You have just one week left to pre-order this beauty and I cannot recommend it enough. Plus, if you do, you’ll win an exclusive and hilarious short story of how Izzy lost her virginity! All you have to do is pre-order before 7th March and send proof of pre-order to theexactoppositeofokay@gmail.com! For more details see this post!

BOOKSTA (5 of 8)

UK Pre-Order | International Pre-Order

If you are alive right now, experiencing the world as we live it today, you must read this book. People need to understand the struggle and pressure teenage girls are under in terms of slut-shaming, nudes and becoming sexualised at such a young age. Trigger warning: I was sexualised at the age of thirteen when someone forced his hand into my pants at school and fingered me alone in a corridor. I was reviled at school for years for something that wasn’t my fault. If I had read this book then, maybe I would have been strong enough to deal with it with the grace and humour of Izzy. Everyone has to read this book.

I’ll also be heading up to Newcastle for the Launch Party on 7th March – let me know if you’re coming! There will be lots of fun stuff going on, including a talk with Laura Steven and Katie Webber, author of Wing Jones; a signing and the chance to get your hands on one of my exclusive TEOOO bookmarks! If you haven’t got tickets yet but you’d like to come, they’re just £3 and you can get them here!

SYNOPSIS

Izzy O’Neill is an aspiring comic, an impoverished orphan, and a Slut Extraordinaire. Or at least, that’s what the malicious website flying round the school says. Izzy can try all she wants to laugh it off – after all, her sex life, her terms – but when pictures emerge of her doing the dirty with a politician’s son, her life suddenly becomes the centre of a national scandal. Izzy’s never been ashamed of herself before, and she’s not going to start now. But keeping her head up will take everything she has…
